How to Get Mewtwo in Pokemon Black and White
Pokémonhas welcomed many legends to its ranks over the years, but Mewtwo holds a special place in the franchise's legacy. While not the only legendary included in Generation I, Mewtwo's post-game status and movie career helped cement the genetically engineered creature as one ofPokémon's true elites.
Even more than two decades after its debut, Mewtwo still ranks among the strongest entities to ever grace thePokémon universe. Mewtwo's inclusion in a game is always used as a selling point, but the bipedal clone is not available to catch in every mainline entry in the series. Here is how to unlock Mewtwo in eachPokémongame, not counting spin-offs. ForPokémon Go, Mewtwo is limited to Ex Raid Battles.
10 Red, Blue, & Yellow; FireRed & LeafGreen; Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee
Mewtwo is the easiest to obtain in Generation I'sPokémon Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow, as he is essentially the post-game boss. Once players have defeated the Elite Four and the Pokémon Champion, they will be able to enter Cerulean Cave to challenge Mewtwo. As there is only one, it is advised to use the Master Ball.
For the Nintendo Switch's Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee, the process is essentially the same, although the remakes' gameplay changes require that Mewtwo is defeated and then caught. Golden Razz Berries are recommended to increase the likelihood of Mewtwo remaining in a Poké Ball.
FireRed & LeafGreencomplicate things slightly by requiring the games' trade service to be unlocked by supplying the gems required to activate Celio's Network Machine. Once done, Cerulean Cave will open to allow Mewtwo to be caught.
9 Gold, Silver, & Crystal
While Kanto can be visited in the post-games, Mewtwo is not in Game Freak's Generation II games. However, the legendary Pokémon can be unlocked using the Time Capsule. Each Pokémon Center holds a Time Capsule on its second floor, which becomes available to use once players reach Ecruteak City and have a chat with Bill.
After that point, it becomes possible to trade between games from Generation I and II, although the latter must trick the system into believing they are the former. Remove any Generation II Pokémon from a party, or Generation I representatives with moves that were not introduced in the first set of games, and then it should be possible to trade for a Mewtwo.
8 HeartGold & SoulSilver
Thankfully,Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilversimplified the process for capturing Mewtwo by reinstating Cerulean Cave, which was reduced to a pile of rubble inPokémon Gold, Silver, & Crystal. After Johto is completed, head to Kanto to take on the region's Gym Leaders.
Once all the badges are collected, Cerulean Cave will become accessible. As per usual, Mewtwo will be waiting inside. It is a difficult fight and, if one is still available, it is best to use a Master Ball.
7 Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald; Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Once again, Mewtwo is locked behind a trade wall for Generation III's main games and their later remakes. ForRuby & Sapphire, the easiest way to get Mewtwo is to trade withFireRed & LeafGreen, which requires a Game Boy Advance Link Cable, two Game Boy Advances, and two Pokémon in each party.
Emeraldadds an extra step as the National Pokédex must be unlocked to trade outside of Generation III's core games. This is done once a player joins the Hall of Fame after becoming Pokémon Champion. When it comes toPokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, the quickest way is to use Wally's PlayNav to transfer Mewtwo fromX & Yto the remakes.
6 Colosseum & XD: Gale of Darkness
Pokémon Colosseum & XD: Gale of Darknessboth support trading with the Game Boy Advance games; therefore,Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, & LeafGreen are all prime candidates to transfer a Mewtwo into the GameCube titles. The Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Link Cable is needed to connect the two platforms.
Colosseum restricts trading until Evice is defeated, who is the final villain of the game's main storyline.XD: Gale of Darknessfollows suit by also requiring the main antagonist, Greevil, to be defeated before trading is unlocked. Once each boss is crushed in their respective games, trades can be done at the Pokémon Center in Phenac City.
5 Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum
There are a couple of ways to get Mewtwo in Generation IV's core games, but they all involve trading. The main method is to use the Pal Park found in Diamond, Pearl, & Platinumto migrate Mewtwo fromFireRed & LeafGreen. This requires the latter's cartridge to be inserted into the Nintendo DS's GBA Slot, which will cause an option to appear in the Generation IV's games' menus asking whether content should be migrated from the older games.
The National Pokédex has to be unlocked for this to be possible, a feat achieved once the Sinnoh region's Pokémon are all seen.
4 Black & White; Black 2 & White 2
Obtaining Mewtwo in Generation V involves unlocking it in the previous generation's core games and then transferring it over to Black & White. This is done through the Poké Transfer Lab's titular service, which becomes available once the National Pokédex is received in the post-game. This utilizes Nintendo's Download Play system.
This allows Generation IV Pokémon to be transferred to Generation V games, although a mini-game must be done to complete the process.
3 X & Y
Taking a break from all the trading, Pokémon X & Y celebrated Mewtwo's Mega Evolutions by returning to the good old days when all that was required to capture the legendary clone was to defeat the Elite Four and enter a nondescript cave.
This time around, Mewtwo can be found in the Unknown Dungeon, a cave located in the northern zone of the Pokémon Village. As usual, there is only one Mewtwo, so make sure to come stacked with the necessary items.
2 Sun & Moon; Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
Mewtwo is not inPokémon Sun & Moon, but trading for it is relatively easy as it is available inUltra Sun & Ultra Moon. For the latter, Mewtwo can be found in Ultra Space Wilds' Rocky World, which is accessed by going through green portals. Encounters are randomized, so this is just a matter of repeatedly visiting this area until Mewtwo appears.
Once Mewtwo is captured inUltra Sun & Ultra Moon, it is time to trade it to the games' predecessors. Trading becomes available relatively quickly in these games, as the menu options appear after the first Pokémon Center is accessed. Quick Link is used for exchanging Pokémon between two Nintendo systems that are in close proximity, while the Festival Plaza is for transfers over the internet.
1 Sword & Shield
For the most recent core entries in the series,Pokémon Sword & Shield, Mewtwo can be acquired by usingPokémon Home. Once the program is set up on the Nintendo Switch, simply transfer the Mewtwo caught inPokémon Let's Go Pikachu & EeveeintoPokémon Home.
Once that is done, Mewtwo can then be transferred intoPokémon Sword & Shield. It is a one-way trip, so make sure Mewtwo will not be needed in the older games.
